Kaleb Johnson ‘Excited’ To Get Started In Pittsburgh, Despite Grandfather Being ‘Longtime’ Browns Fan
The Pittsburgh Steelers made their second draft pick at 83rd overall on Friday night, and they used it to select Kaleb Johnson, a running back out of Iowa. Johnson makes a lot of sense and provides good value in the third round.
Speaking to the media shortly after being drafted, Johnson talked about his mindset coming to Pittsburgh. According to Brian Batko of The Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Johnson says that he’s excited to come to Pittsburgh. He also mentioned a funny nugget of info, that his grandfather is a Cleveland Browns fan.
It’s ironic that the Steelers landed a back who grew up with family watching the Browns, but Pittsburgh has to be happy with the selection. The running back position didn’t fly off the boards as fast as some expected during the second round, which helped leave Johnson available to the Steelers/
The scheme fit makes a lot of sense as well. Johnson’s running style won’t be new to Steelers fans. He’s similar to Najee Harris in a lot of ways and seems to be the type of back Arthur Smith would want in his backfield. Selecting Johnson continues the trend of drafting players who came in for pre-draft visits, as well.
Johnson will add some nice variety to the backfield. Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell are both solid backs, but neither brings a lot of size to the table. Johnson does just that and runs with physicality. He’s a guy who excels both as a blocker and in short-yardage situations. You can check out our full scouting report here.
Of course, there was another storyline on the table, too. The Steelers passed on Shedeur Sanders in the first round and he surprisingly ended up being on the table again at No. 83. Once again, the Steelers passed on Sanders, or any other QB option on the table at that point.
With all of that said, it’s really hard to be unhappy with this selection. The Steelers needed a running back, especially a big, physical one. Johnson was expected by most to be taken in the second round, so taking him in the third is excellent value.
Unfortunately for his grandfather, he might have to switch allegiances soon.
