Opening statements set to begin in sexual assault trial of 5 former world junior hockey players

Good morning from London, Ont., a city of about 400,000 people that’s halfway between Toronto and Detroit. I’m Kate Dubinski and I’ll be updating this page throughout the day.

The CBC crew arrived at the downtown’s Superior Court at about 7:30 a.m. ET to get a spot in line — there were already a couple reporters here saving a spot, as well as some TV trucks.

The courthouse doors opened at 8:30 a.m. and the proceedings are set to begin just after 10. Reporters are set up outside the courtroom doors, waiting to snag a good spot in the public gallery. The acoustics in the courtroom are dreadful, so it’s important to get a good spot. Getting up to the courtroom on the 14th floor is a bit of a scramble, partly because only two of the three public elevators work, and they’re finicky.
